Who are these people? They have alot of photos but some are not labelled as to where they are taken. Do you think Holly could use some of the Midland Photos. Holly was also told that many engines could have run on this line as the cars and engines were used throughout the lines. How accurate is this statement? Can we say a photo was definitely taken on this line based on the engine number?

Re: Bouldermill Collection/ Chuck Conway
These people are the collectors who now own the images.
Most of the old colour images are taken by John A MacIntosh and I have tracked the best I can the entire DAR portion of the collection his son started selling in January 2008. The entire collection so far (I have a few hundred more to upload yet) is here:
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... tosh_Photo
The collectors are many, me included. Mr Conway can be contacted via email on this forum as can many of the collectors. The rest like Mr. Bouldermill would never reply to requests to have their permission nor supply higher resolution scans. Never the less, I still wanted to acknowledge Mr. Bouldermill's collection and so I used his eBay name. The scans I do have have SAMPLE on them because I do have the permission of the seller to use his sales scans and so I chose to leave them that way for now.
Copyright is a funny thing. As we are non-profit and for research only here, then we as Canadians can use images under section 29 of the copyright act. That being said, I would encourage you to seek out permissions from those you can before using images from here and to never use these images for any commercial purpose what so ever. Many people are aware that the majority of the images are exclusive to the DARDPI and can be found no where else. See our notes here:

Good luck!
As for the engine question, there are others here much more qualified to answer but in general, engineers were pretty exclusive to their steam engines and as such, the majority of engines tended to stay in one area for quite some time, so yes it is more a possibility that some engines were exclusive to one sub as a rule rather than everybody's engines were everywhere all the time.
As for the photos taken on the DAR, for the most part I think everyone here on the board can identify by now pretty well where most photos were taken just by the background and so with certainty most of the identification concerning engines' locations wasn't based on the engine number at any particular point in time but by the environment it was taken in. Most of the engine identification has been based on yard photos in Yarmouth, Kentville, and Truro. As well, we have also combined 3 private roster lists and of course, Omer Lavallée:
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... all%C3%A9e
to come up with a fairly accurate roster of the DAR. We do not however, pretend to be the ultimate authority and welcome any information to improve our roster forwarded our way. Additionally while we list the predessors of the DAR for general interest, we do not claim to be a roster for the W&AR, WCR or the MRC.
Hope that made some sense. If you want to chat sometime, email me your telephone number and I'll give you a call one day. I'm on Shaw VOIP so long distance is really really cheap ($2.40 hour).

Thanks Steve
I know that the copyright laws are very definite as to what can be used but after talking to the museum of Science where some of the photos are and the Truro Daily news I have gotten permission to use the photos an maybe it is because Holly only plans to put out no more than 100 books and donate some to the local historical society and library. The Museum of Science does charge a fee to use their photographs though. We do have a poem that Holly would like to include about the line but as the author has died the copyright rules are very definite and we have only just located who the author was. I'll email it to you.

Re: Bouldermill Collection/ Chuck Conway
The question I asked about the engine was because she did locate in Truro the list of engines from a man in Yarmouth with much of the information you had here. Holly included all the engine info as she could not say which engines might be on the line. Do you think she should or do you think she should try and limit it?
In the local historical society there was a list of engines and information wheels, manufacturer number etc.. from a man in Yarmouth. It had all engines not just the one that was normally on the Truro subdivision line. She was talking to Bill Clarke and another gentlemen who said just because they normally were the engine for a line it did not mean that they might not be used on the line. Some said there were engines that were not used on the line due to weight? As she did not fully understand this she was confused. So in her information she has all the engines listed but should she just concentrate on one or two or should she eliminate some entirely because they could not go on the line. If so which ones were not allowed on the line.

Re: Bouldermill Collection/ Chuck Conway
You haven't really told us the whole story so answering the question is a little difficult.
Are you saying there's a list of engines that were spotted informally in Truro by an employee or by a local resident? Or is it that this is an official DAR list of engines recorded in Truro? The gentleman who did this left Truro and now resides in Yarmouth? Or is it that a gentleman who lives in Yarmouth and has the list got it from a man who worked in Truro?
Well here's the problem with a list like any of the scenarios above if you are trying to determine what engines were assigned strictly to the Midland from such a list. Nearly all the engines in the DAR probably went through Truro at one time or another once CPR leased the DAR because they would run them through Truro up to Montreal for major overhauls and repairs.
If you care to share a little more information maybe we can get down to the bottom of this for you.
As far as the permission to use the material in a publication, I assume you have their permission in writing. That being said and done, you are on your way then. Next stop, CPR.

Has Holly got any more news regarding this project and does it look likely that she will be able to produce a published work?

Holly is still working on it she is looking for some finishing touches and working on the engine part for finishing touches.... she has very dry info on each engine that came from an chart she found in the truro museum. She is looking for interesting stories on each engine. she found out the bell for one engine is now in a local church. I took her to the Halifax and South WEstern Museum this summer and we spent more than two hours there well worth the trip but it unfortunately slowed down our drive and we barely made it to the Memory Lane Museum which is on our list for next year. I do see what you mean by cataloguing and sorting though. The museum could be better organized if only we lived closer..... She was impressed by something to do with ticket holder ... a large piece of wooden furniture that was in a local station that was used to hold tickets...
Does anyone know if the modelling group would be interested in doing a display for our heritage weekend in Kennetcook this summer??
