Hi, I am a newbie to all things trains. I have seen the DAR exhibit in the Middleton Home Hardware some time ago.
Currently, I am a pastor in North Alton and am a new member of the Atlantic Mechanical Engineering Society which is also part of the Trecothic minature railway in Windsor. I am just returning to lathe work after 34 years and have an interest in small steam engines and traction engines. However, as part of a way of raising funds I offered to make some 4 tone wooden train whistles. I thought it would be appropriate to learn what the four notes were for the DAR trains so I could make the whistles fairly accurate in pitch. Some trains hadC#, E, G, A#-which musicians tell us is a minor key which gives that mournful sound.
Question: does anyone know what the DAR/ CNR whistle tones are? My thanks, Rev. Quincy Collins

Re: DAR/CNR whistle tones
Welcome Reverend!
And what a great question. It would be a piece of cake if someone had recorded a few DAR whistles from years back. Would anyone know of such recordings?
One thought I have is this info might be available from CPR as so many of the locos were CPR Angus built, unless of course the DAR changed the whistles. As for the other locos built by others, I imagine they spec'ed the same tones as their own although that just a wild guess.
So tell us about this DAR exhibit in the Middleton Home Hardware. Is it a permanent display or was it just for a time?
By the way, such whistles might make a great items for the Middleton museum gift shop too.
By the way, the Trecothic web site left hand menu doesn't work so all you can access is the main page and you're stuck there.

Re: DAR/CNR whistle tones
Hi, this is the web page address I have bookmarked for Trecothic-
http://www.trecothiccreektrains.org/ind ... mation.htm
Is that the one you used? If it does not work, please let me know and I will let
the AMES/Trecothic web administrator know. Thanks for taking a look!
Meanwhile, amidst a busy week, work proceeds in small bits as yesterday afternoon
I was able to produce the train whistle blanks.
As for the display in Middleton I think it was only for a short time.
Have a great and large day, Quincy

Re: DAR/CNR whistle tones
The web site is OK. Just that I can't see the menu on the left hand side at all. Nothing. Just blank.
Here's CPR 2816, the restored CPR Hudson. I can hear E-A. What do you think?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaiLfSXAHsk
Then there's this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-TLjvSPF3o
Go to 1:11 and it's CPR 894 with basically the same E-A with some variation from the Doppler effect.
Go to 4:17 for some CNR steam using a two tone B-E whistle although I don't know how much lower it might be without the Doppler effect.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLLpU-4M ... re=related
This is probably the best we're going to get though.
Go to 0:48 and you'll hear A-C-D
CPR 2317 at Steamtown
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVQvVmpI ... re=related
Sounds like a C-F to me.
So the answer seems to be that CPR had a variety of tones. Perhaps specific classes each had their own tone?
As a final note, here's some whistle engineering:
