Trackside Signs

Post by Paul Charland »

Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone had or knows where to find photos of trackside signs that would have been used during the 1970s. I'm talking about track speed signs, flanger signs, whistle and mile posts.

Any help would be appreciated.

Matt had a few shots in his photo section that might help.

I'm sure there's lots of others scattered throughout other collections. If we do end up with a good collection, let's put it together and create a signals section on the wiki.

Hi Steve,

Thanks, the white oval with the two diamonds cut out of it must be a CP flanger sign. I have seen other signs in the various photos in the wiki, but for the most part they have been too far away to read or the back of the sign is facing the photographer.

Might have to join the CP Sig group and ask.

You should go to the CP Sig web site, join and access their scanned library. Tons of signage blueprints there with fonts, sign structures, lamp diagrams, semaphore designs, trackside signage and on and on.

For example:

Hi Paul,

Yes, the rectangular white sign with black dots is a flanger sign. I have a real one in my collection, along with the CN version. I also have a switch stand target. I don't think I have a CP whistle sign, but I have a CN one.

I did not get your MSTS working yet. Still waiting on a friend to help me with it.

I also have the following signs, derail, close clearance, rural 45 degree crossbuck, etc. Photos available upon request:-)

I believe the white rectangular sign with black dots is also for wedge plows. They have a blade between the rails that is to be lifted before crossings, or they tear out the crossing planks. I recommend the following videos that show wedge plows in action and the blade being raised and lowered:

Greg Scholl Video Productions: "Plow Extras" and "Snow Plow with CN F7's" Both feature branchlines that no longer exist in Southern Ontario. http://www.gregschollvideo.com/snowplow-dvds.html

Rail Innovations: Branchlines in Transition. It might be "Towers and Branchlines" Not sure as the link does work. http://web.archive.org/web/200712270217 ... m/main.htm This video also features a plow extra on the now abandoned branchine from Orangeville to Owen Sound.

These are some of my favorite railfan videos and are highly recommended.

Hi Matt,

I think I'm good for signs for now thanks, but I'll keep you in mind.

What is it you are still having problems with, maybe if you get an error write it down and post it and I might be able to help you out.

I have another beta on the go, just finished Wolfville. It should only be a month before I'm finished to Hants Border and would post a beta to the list here.

Hi Matt,

It's been a while but yes, CN flanger signs are just the opposite to CP flanger signs, two white dots on a black background, I'll have to draw them for the Bedford Sub when I import it to the DAR route in a monthish.

Back when I was drawing the Springfield Terminal someone turned my plow into a steam engine to use the steam as snow, it was pretty neat but for some reason sucked the life out of my video card. Maple Leaf Trains apparently had this feature working on a CP plow, so when I have time to finish my CP plow drawing I'm going to have another go at adding "snow" to it.

Maybe there's a way to animate the wings.

Sure enough, MLT has it. I've got the thing and it works great.

I have a friend that just found mileage sign 21? near Clarksville the other day. Someone located it and asked if he wanted it.

This is cool. So what's going to to happen to it? Is he going to get it and do something with it?

Hi Holly,

...and the correct answer is "Yes"!

Clarksville was mileage 18.7, Midland was 22.8, so it must be in the bush somewhere between the two.
