Dominion Atlantic Railway Maintenance Of Way (MOW) and Non-Revenue Equipment

One of the toughest areas to track is the MOW area of equipment. They are often a rag-tag collection of ex-mainline service rolling stock that is past it's prime time but can survive for years after in a number of different MOW roles. We do our best to organize and identify what they are and where they came from. From about 1920 to the 1940s, the DAR used a number system for its MOW cars which designated vans (cabooses) with 90 numbers, boom cars with 700 numbers, cranes and boarding cars with 800 numbers and plows and flangers with 900 numbers. In later years, the DAR switched to the CPR 400000 series for MOW cars. The DAR also followed CPR practice in designating its MOW cars "Service", indicating that they were non revenue work cars. DAR works cars were often, although not always, lettered "Service" when they became MOW equipment.
