Dominion Atlantic Railway Steam Locomotive type 4-6-2

Also known as a Pacific. The Pacific type engine was a logical progression from the venerable 10 wheeler. With larger and larger boilers appearing on 10 wheelers, the trailing 2 wheels were added to support the fireboxes and cabs that were now cantilevered to the rear of the larger boilers. Appearing at the turn of the 20th century, the Pacific ushered out the era of steam in the 40's and 50's on many shortlines including the D.A.R. With many Pacifics having lifespans of over 50 years, these were truly one of steams most memorable engines.

The first Pacific arrived in 1936 on the D.A.R. signalling the start of the end of 10 wheeler in main line passenger service. As the wooden passenger car fleet aged, it was replaced by steel heavyweight passenger equipment that demanded the increased tractive effort of the Pacific. The Pacific was still light enough to run on the light D.A.R. track and was the perfect replacement for the 10 wheeler in mainline passenger service through to the dieselization of the line.

There are two different sub-catetegory trees available to search on. If you are familiar with the C.P.R. classification system such as G1a then use the first section that lists the locomotives in this fashion.

If you are just looking for an engine number then use the second section where the engine number is in the format DARxxxx.
