Dr. John A. MacIntosh, Ph.D, 1917-1998
Mr. Bob MacIntosh, the photographer's son, provided the following information about his father:
These photographs were taken by my father, Dr. John A. MacIntosh, Ph.D, a long time transportation and railroad enthusiast. His passion was the DAR, and even had a model train layout named the "Diminutive Atlantic Railroad", after the DAR. His ties to Canada were his relatives living in Truro and Halifax, although he was born and raised in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY. He spent his adult life living on Long Island, NY, and teaching Transportation at a New York City College. He passed away at 81, and now his memory lives on through his photographs.

As you browse you may notice some images with SAMPLE on them. Those are John MacIntosh photos and his son, Bob MacIntosh gave us permission to post the eBay sample photos even while they were selling. Bob told us that his dad would have been very pleased to have all his photos shared as such. At some point even Bob was going to donate the entire scanned collection but due to his untimely death, we never received them. Many buyers came forward after and allowed us to post the image of the slide they bought but those that remain so, the buyers have never come forth. Never the less we do have Bob's permission to show them, as unattractive as the red SAMPLE is.
John made many trips to Nova Scotia and recorded many excellent sequences of operation on the Dominion Atlantic. As his collection of photos unfolds it reveals some great days of train watching. It is doubtful that we will ever discover such a fine collection of photos from this time period or earlier.
From the photos we can determine that John made the following trips to Nova Scotia and during that time photographed the D.A.R: August 1949, August 1951, July 1954, August 1956, July/August 1958, August 1959, August 1961, July/August 1967, August 1973, July 1975, August 1977, July 1986 & June 1988.
One of the best sequences to unfold so far is his July 3, 1954 trip which included some train chasing of Train No. 98 from Yarmouth to Halifax. Click on this Train No. 98 link to see what has been discovered already.
John it seems, also carried a black and white camera with him and from the photos found, would indicate that he used the black and white from at least 1956 to 1967. He most likely used the black and white to record the same locations he took his colour photos from, as black and white could be developed locally in just a few days whereas it would be at least a month to receive his Kodachrome back from Kodak. That would have allowed him to make his notes and even double check his descriptions and details before leaving Nova Scotia. Which then leaves us with this wonderful duplicity where we have a black and white and colour shot of many of the best scenes photographed on the D.A.R.
