Dominion Atlantic Railway Steam Locomotives.

A cross section of the Dominion Atlantic's locomotive fleet in 1937

Steam ruled the DAR until 1956 when diesels began to be introduced. A short transition period lasted until 1959 when steam was ended for all but a few passenger specials. The end for steam completely came in March of 1960 when No. 2209 made the last recorded steam run with a hockey special to Halifax.[1]

You can explore the Dominion Atlantic's large fleet of steam locomotives by several routes. Each locomotive has been cross referenced in a number of ways. You can choose by locomotive number, which is the way most people are used to looking them up. Please note that when there are duplicate engine numbers, they are all included on the same engine number page. The DAR was also famous for naming most of its steam locomotives, so you can look up Named Locomotives. You can also choose locomotives by their Builder, by their Wheel Type designation (4-4-0 for example) or if you are knowledgeable about the CPR system of locomotive designations you may choose that category (D4b for example).

Dominion Atlantic "Acadia" No. 11.

If you would like to just look at locomotive photos, we have also categorized the images so that if you look up "Steam Locomotive Gallery", you'll find thumbnails of all the steam locomotive photos. Clicking on the thumbnail will bring you to the image page where a larger photo is available along with a description of the image. Near the bottom of the page there will be a list of all pages that use this image and at the very bottom is more categorization as to the photographer and/or collector who holds the image.

You can also learn about the DAR steam locomotives unique ornate number plates and bold Bold red colour schemes.

As with all images on the wiki, look to the lower left corner of the photo as many higher resolution photos are available by clicking on the "Full Resolution" link there.

If you want to to to a particular steam locomotive number or type that you already know, you should continue to the bottom of this page as that is where you will find the more specific articles and categories.
