Billtown Station
Billtown Station
Wood Station 1914 to present
Mile 2.7 on the Weston Subdivision.
This typical North Mountain Line station was built in 1914 by J. H. Hicks & Sons of Bridgetown. A slightly modified version of the standard CPR Station No. 4 Plan.(1) It was a simple wooden one story passenger and freight station, originally 60 by 18 feet, containing a waiting room, agent's office and freight room with overhanging eaves and decorative brackets.(2)
The station was originally located on the north side of the tracks at Billtown, 230 feet from the road and faced Billtown's 1000 foot siding.(3) It was served by a travelling agent. The station also provided a dwelling to the section foreman and his family.
The station was moved about 4 km west to an orchard in Lakeville after the North Mountain Line was abandoned in 1961. It first served as a bunkhouse for orchard workers but was later converted to a storage shed.(4)
The station was moved a third time in January 2012 to just off Lamount Road in Lakeville along the old Weston line, about 2 km for its original location. According to it's current owner Shelly Bain, they are going to restore the exterior of the building using original plans which they hope to have done sometime in 2013. Though the interior of the building sounds like it's going to be used as a work shop. They had custom boards milled to use for the flooring in the station.
