Midland Railway Co.

Cover of the 1904 Passenger Schedule, the earliest known Midland timetable.

In 1896 the act (chapter 85, 1896) to incorporate the Midland Railway Company was passed by the Nova Scotia Legislature. The plan was to build a railway from Truro through Clifton, Princeport, South Maitland, Kennetcook, Stanley, and Scotch Village to Windsor. Construction started in 1898 and required the difficult building of the massive South Maitland Bridge over the Shubenacadie River. A partial subsidy was paid in 1900 as detailed at Order in Council 2244 of year 1900 (Midland Railway Subsidy). Completed in 1901, the Midland ran as a independent short line with its own fleet of locomotives and freight cars and its own style of stations. An article in an industry magazine in June 1901 included some details about the imminent completion of the line, and in particular some details of gradients and curvature. In 1905, it was bought by the DAR and became the Truro Subdivision.
