Snow plow wreck at Somerset, January 19, 1923.
The photograph shows Locomotive No. 39 derailed in the foreground with snow plow D.A. 4 twisted nearly backwards on the right. Locomotive No. 556 has arrived on the left to dig out the wreck followed by one of the Kentville 0-6-0 switchers at the far left in the distance.
A note on the back of one print of this photo reads: "This train was on DAR Line North Mountain Branch at Somerset 1923". According to a Berwick Register article on Mar. 28, 1989, this photo was taken in January 1923 by T. M. Morton of Somerset. Morton told the Register the snow plow extra was westbound when a massive drift knocked the plow and engine sideways. One of the engine crew was badly scalded. Morton was paid to help shovel the locomotive out.
Another original print of the photo, artifact No. 09.34.1, at the Apple Capital Museum in Berwick credits the photographer as Frank Lee Auburn.
The book "The Weston Branch and Margaretville" features this photograph and two other views of the same wreck noting that it took a week to clear the snow, extract the wreck and open the line.
