NARRATIVE: The Canadian Pacific Railway company was incorporated in 1881. The creation of the CPR went hand in hand with confederation; in fact the task of building this railways was originally undertaken by one of the fathers of Confederation Sir. John A. MacDonald. The building of this railway took over 4-years to complete - finally being finished in November of 1885. The railway connected Canada from one coast to the other - the first CPR transcontinental passenger train left from the Montreal station in June of 1886. This collection contains items from a CPR dining car/CPR station restaurant.
DESCRIPTION: Silver-plated sugar bowl with 2 square-looped handles (1 on each side). On one side of bowl there are the initials "DAR" in scrawly/fancy writing. Flat, circular lid hinged on top of bowl on one side. Circular/triangular handle attached to same side of lid as the hinge. Makers information on bottom of bowl.
HISTORY OF USE: These various items were used on CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) dining cars and in CPR Station restaurants between approximately 1890 and the 1940s. This particular piece was used on the DAR (Dominion Atlantic Railway) dining cars. DAR was owned by CPR from 1911 until they closed in the 1990s.
