Yarmouth Steamship Company, Limited
On February 1, 1887 The Yarmouth Steamship Company was incorporated with L.H. Baker as President, Lyman E. Cann and J.W. Moody as Directors.
- 1901: DAR purchased the entire YSC fleet and any rights they had to the Boston service, as well leased the YSC's Yarmouth wharf. WCR/Y&AR and DAR PTTs closely coordinated with YSC's arrivals and departures. Family connection.
- Negotiations had not been entirely smooth, as detailed in an article shown at: The_Railway_and_Shipping_World_-_1900-12_-_DAR_London_Special_General_Meeting.
- The DAR was still disappointed at the end of March 1901, as detailed in an article shown at: The_Railway_and_Shipping_World_-_1901-05_-_DAR_London_General_Meeting.
- The purchase for $260,000 finally took place June 15 1901, as detailed in an article shown at: The_Railway_and_Shipping_World_-_1901-06_-_DAR_Purchases_YSS. The article noted that fares were restored to their former level of $4 one-way, $7 return.
- The DAR took possession of the vessels on June 22, 1901, as detailed in an article shown at: The_Railway_and_Shipping_World_-_1901-07_-_Vessels_Transferred_to_DAR.
- The shareholders ratified the purchase at a Special General Meeting held July 15, 1901, as detailed in an article shown at The_Railway_and_Shipping_World_-_1901-08_-_DAR_Special_Meeting.
An industry magazine item in 1901 gives some information on the results of the purchase of the Yarmouth Steamship Company by the DAR. The short item read:
- In September, 1900, the Dominion Atlantic Ry. Co.'s steamers made 24 trips from Boston to Yarmouth, and carried 3,733 passengers; in the same period the Yarmouth Steamship Co.'s boats made 21 trips, and carried 2,954 passengers between the two ports. This year the D.A.R. absorbed the Y.SS.Co., and running all the steamers made 30 trips between Boston and Yarmouth, carrying 3,740 passengers. Owing to the removal of competition the D.A.R. receipts from this traffic are nearly double what they were in 1900.
